HTTP Authentication beyond Basic and Digest

Application protocols based on HTTP (Blog publishing, WebDAV, CalDAV and more) usually require non-form-based user authentication. Some users/administrators have found that Basic and Digest authentication aren't sufficient for these applications and have requested that HTTP work with SASL, GSS, SAML or other frameworks.
