Podcast Walking Tours - a subset of the above, the Dublin Tourism Office makes available self-guided walking tours in the form of Podcasts. Subscribe in iTunes (instructions at the bottom of the page), load some up on your iPod and walk the day away. Walks include "Georgian Dublin," "The Historic Northside," "Castles & Cathedrals," "Viking & Medieaval (sic) Dublin," "Temple Bar to the Docklands," "In the Steps of Ulysses," and "Kilmainham."

DTO Journey Planner - a handy route-planner for pedestrians/cyclists, great for finding your way around the city centre. Longer journeys will probably be easier done with Luas/bus/DART, for which there doesn't seem to be a competent route planner - ask NoirinPlunkett if you need a hand!

Arts

For anyone bringing kids, The Ark is the only place to be. A fantastic children's theatre and arts centre, it often hosts workshops to go alongside its musical and theatrical programs.

The Abbey is Ireland's national theatre, and often shows educational or Irish plays. This year is the Beckett centenary, so look out for some new productions of his works.

The Gate tends to focus on more popular plays, particularly of European or American significance, while The Gaiety prides itself as Dublin's foremost 'entertainment venue', and sometimes hosts somewhat less serious theatre.

Historic

Bank of Ireland. The former House of Lords for Ireland, and the building which housed Grattan's Parliament. Guided tours are available, or you can visit any time during bank opening hours (10am-4pm, Monday-Friday).

Trinity College Dublin including Book of Kells & Long Room library. Queues tend to be long in the mornings, but generally abate in the early afternoon. Takes about half an hour to see the whole exhibition.

Admission to all of the branches of the National Museum of Ireland is free. Many other museums and galleries ask for a small donation, some have fixed prices. Most museums are open Tuesday-Sunday, closed Mondays

Shopping

Dublin's main shopping area is centered around Grafton St and O'Connell St. There are large shopping centres at St Stephen's Green (top of Grafton St) and Jervis St (go down Henry St, off O'Connell St), which should cover all the basics. More interesting shops are generally found in the side streets off these streets.

For Ireland's take on a 'mall', try the Dundrum Town Centre. Take the Luas from St Stephen's Green to Balally (3.90EUR return), and follow the signs from the stop (less than five minutes walk). The centre includes shopping, a variety of food outlets and a cinema.

Food! There's a Vons (full service) Grocery about 3 miles from the Sheraton. Here's a map of the route. If you walk, stay on the south side of N. Harbor until you come to the foot bridge, then cross and make your way up Nimitz. We took a taxi back for $5.

There are a couple of parks just west and within a mile or so of the Sheraton on N. Harbor including the Cancer Survivors Park.

  1. Visit the "Fernsehturm" (TV-Tower): Touristy, but nice view.

5. Take a bike through Killesberg Park, Rosenstein Park and Schlossgarten back to the city centre. You have to push the bike through Killesberg Park (no cycling there), but afterwards its a nice downhill ride to Rosenstein. There is also a nice "Biergarten" between Killesberg and Rosenstein Park near Pragsattel where you might have yet another "Mass". Takes 1.5 hours.

6. Go to the beach at "Sky beach". Trendy "beach" bar on top of a parking garage, volleyball field included (though you have to go down 5 storeys if you kick the ball over the side (wink).
