Comment: [Original edit by BillCole] Removing anything suggesting that SARE is still a thing. It is NOT

The SARE rules are broken to the point of being harmful. Do not use them.

If you are using any SARE rules, remove them.

The SARE website says (2009-12-14):

No Format

IMPORTANT: Due to Ninjas being busy with lives, wives & hockey matches, SARE rules aren't being updated.

There is no need to run automated update tools as all they will produce is useless load on everybody's servers.

Any updates will be announced on the SpamAssassin Users Mailing List.

SARE Channels

This page has the list of channels that can be used with sa-update.

SARE provides several rules, some which have versions from 0-4, 0 being the one that catches most spam, while not blocking any ham. Versions 1-4 which are new rules, which don't yet hit lots of spam but blocks too many ham are not present in this channel. For more info on how to use this channel, see http://saupdates.openprotect.com SARE Channel for most used rules

If you wish to select your own set of rules that has served well in the past, channels for individual sare rules are available too. See http://daryl.dostech.ca/sa-update/sare/sare-sa-update-howto.txt SARE single rule channels. Please note that 70_sare_whitelist_spf.cf alone won't work as this rule doesn't have some "ifplugin" wrappings needed to lint successfully.
