The ApacheWiki is our active Wiki and ready for use. Use it, don't use it, its up to you (no one will force you though conceivably one day you'll miss out on some important nugget of information...but it probably would have gone unrecorded anyhow). AndrewCOliver and PierFumagalli set it up.
ApacheWiki is an instance of UseMod:UseModWiki, which you might like to visit if you are new to wikis. Most important are the UseMod:TextFormattingRules which show you how to format the content you add. The namespace mechanism supported by UseMod:UseModWiki is UseMod:SubPages.
Proposed Conventions
- What?
- If the majority of wiki users think this is a good idea then we'll probably start enforcing them (we = the majority of the wiki users)

FAQ
- Q: What is a Wiki?
A: WhatIsAWiki<click here)
- Q: How to I get an account?
- A: You don't need one to edit (though your IP address is logged).
- A: Click on Preferences (see the header/footer), enter a username, ignore the password, click save. There is no authentication of users!
- Q: If there is not authentication should we all just log in as Andrew?
A: Sure! Why not? ... Well, it's probably not a BestPractice.
- A: However, Why would we give that jerk credit for our hard work on the Wiki? (-Andy)
A: Seriously, no. You don't have to authenticate, but things generally work better if people are consistent. If you don't want to authenticate, please post anonymously.
Q: Are there any NeatWikiTricks?
A: Why yes there are, visit: NeatWikiTricks and learn more.
- Q: The wiki doesn't do X currently, can it do X? I know it can do X, can you bla bla bla?
A: Look here: ApacheWikiSource and here: ApacheWikiConfig and supply patches to infrastructure@apache.org by using the unix diff -u command.
- Q: But how do I know if that someone else isn't already working on that enhancement.. Where can we collaborate?
A: Look here: WikiProjectPage
- Q: Why was this particular wiki chosen?
A: WhyThisWiki
- Q: Why should we use the wiki?
A: WhyUseWiki
- Q: Why shouldn't we use the wiki?
- Q: Is there a place for the accumulation of bright ideas for a better Wiki?
A: Yes, here: (READ THE ABOVE QUESTION) WikiProjectPage -- To be honest though. We don't NEED ideas...we need code. Lots of people have ideas. But then there is the GravyMakingStory.
Q: Can users delete pages? On WardsWiki, if two people save a page that contains nothing but "delete" (optionally followed by any small amount of explanatory text), that page is deleted. Rationale: There are a lot of "ANewPageForJoe" and other off-topic pages that have no long-term value.
- Q: Does Apache have 2 Wikis?
A: Yes and no. An instance of SubWiki, a Wiki implementation written in Python and integrated with Subversion, has been installed here. For more information (and possibly some discussion), see SubWiki
- Q: I want to delete a page...
- A: Is it really worth it? Mark it as *deleted* with a forward reference and be done.
- Q: But I really really want to delete it
A: join the wikidiffs@apache.org mailing list and submit the request. One of the administrators will do this for you. Warning: submitting too many requests will make you an administrator.
- A: Is it really worth it? Mark it as *deleted* with a forward reference and be done.
- Q: Has any thought been given to allowing some projects to have their own Wiki? This would solve the problem of who to send mail notifications to. It would also help with namespace conflicts and such.
A: We do not reserve the power to forbid it (not sure we could if we wanted to heck I'm not even sure who "we" is). It would however reduce the usefulness of the "search", but if you want to... JustDoIt. (That being said, I do not plan to provide assistance/administration etc to other wikis so make sure you want to do that, Namespace collision is not a compelling reason whatsoever, thats a reason for conventions).
- Q: There seems to be a lot of fuss surrounding this wiki. Is there an independant wiki outside of the foundation where we can document Apache issues with a little less control?
A: Yes. WikiAboutApache
- Q: In the event that ASF (Apache Software Foundation?) does decide to shutdown the Wiki, will there be enough notice given to allow users to move pages elsewhere?
- Q: Where can we find other Wikis???
A: Wikis list implemented in different languages PHP, Perl, Lisp, Prolog, ... Wikis list (Salim)
- Q: Can I advertise on the Wiki?
- A: No. Commercial speech will be deleted.
Gracias.
