The RSS standard bridges content producers and consumers. The success of any standard depends on the breadth of it's adoption, and then upon the level of traffic intermediated by the standard. This is sometimes called "the bandwagon".
The following sites are various attempts to get a picture of the RSS bandwagon. They search out every RSS feed they can find. They search out, where they can find it, information about RSS consumers. Then they play with the data.
Some of these sites emphasis aggregating as large a set of RSS producers as possible, i.e. they are directories. Some sites emphasis capturing the directed graph of linking between producers and consumers, you might call that ecology? Some sites emphasis capturing which sites have fresh content. The last of theis get's a little closer to measuring how much real traffic over the standard there is.
