Proposal for a Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) Implementation as a Web services project named “WSRP4J”

21, Jan. 2003, Peter Fischer (peter.fischer@de.ibm.com)

(0) rationale

The OASIS Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) standard (see http://oasis-open.org/committees/wsrp/) defines visual, user-facing web services that plug-n-play with portals or other intermediary web applications acting as consumers. It enables businesses to provide content or applications in a form that can easily be aggregated in portals without any programming effort.    The goal of the proposed project is to provide a WSRP client and server implementation that can be used to provide and test WSRP web services in order to enable everybody to create WSRP services using the WSRP4J Open Source Code so that ultimately based on the WSRP4J open source project a wide variety of pluggable WSRP services can be deployed in the Internet for consumption by portals.

(1) scope of the project

The scope of this project is to create and maintain an open source implementation of WSRP specification compliant services and consumers. This project will not create a new portal, but produce components that may be used standalone to create WSRP services or be integrated in portals. There will be a simple WSRP consumer for test purposes and a plug-point for the JSR 168 reference implementation to allow wrapping JSR 168 portlets as web services. Also, a JSR 168 compliant portlet proxy will be provided in order to allow integration of WSRP services into JSR 168 compliant portals.

(2) identify the initial source from which the project is to be populated

IBM has a prototype based on Tomcat, which will be the starting point for the subproject (see www.alphaworks.ibm.com/ …)
