Background Information

Cassandra will participate as part of the Apache Software Foundation. The ASF is basically guaranteed to be accepted as an umbrella organization. Here is their summer of code page from 2009:

Google SoC 2010 is just starting - First message from Google

The time period for students to apply is March 29th 19:00 UTC - April 9th 19:00 UTC. Please first read the FAQs: especially the "Applying to Google Summer of Code" section.

It is highly advised that you hop on IRC (#cassandra on Freenode) for more than a few minutes to ask if your idea is a good idea, introduce yourself to the community, and see who plays an active role in Cassandra.
