What is AVRO ?
Avro is a data serialization system.
- Rich data structures.
- A compact, fast, binary data format.
- A container file, to store persistent data.
- Remote procedure call (RPC).
- Simple integration with dynamic languages. Code generation is not required to read or write data files nor to use or implement RPC protocols. Code generation as an optional optimization, only worth implementing for statically typed languages.
How can I get started quickly with Avro?
How to Statically Compile:
In Java: Add the avro jar, the jackson-mapper-asl.jar and jackson-core-asl.jar to your CLASSPATH. Then run java org.apache.avro.specific.SpecificCompiler <json file>. (this appears to be out of date, the SpecificCompiler requires two arguments, presumably an input and and output file, but it isn't clear that this does)
How are Strings represented in Java?
They use org.apache.avro.util.Utf8, not java.lang.String.
More generally, how do Avro types map to Java types?
