Catalyst Committee

All nominations will be received and reviewed by the Catalyst Committee. For its first year (2024), the Catalyst committee will include the PMC, 3-5 active contributors that will be selected by the PMC member(s), and the program lead (Melissa Logan and Paul Au). In subsequent years, the Catalyst Committee will include PMC member(s), previous Catalysts, and a program lead.

Catalyst Committee meetings will be held at a frequency determined by the committee. Meetings will be held publicly with recaps available on the ASF wiki. Official communications will take place on marketing@cassandra.apache.org.

Reviewing nominations will involve reviewing the nominee’s submission to verify the accuracy of their contributions. All reviews will be handled by at least two people to remove bias and make sure nothing is missed. Preference will be given to users rather than vendors whenever possible. The program lead will draft a template for reviewing nomination to be shared with the committee.

**This first year will be an experiment to understand how to effectively manage a community-run Catalyst program, and amendments may be necessary which will be documented and added to the wiki. It is important the program is vendor neutral, does not dilute or interfere with the official committer and PMC roles, and always provides transparency and permanence of all information to the PMC. **

Criteria

Catalysts can engage in a variety of activities. They must meet and maintain the following criteria in order to become and remain an Catalyst:

  • Regularly answer member questions on any community platform
  • Regularly welcome and help orient new community members
  1. Maintain 1 year of active experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Publicly speaking about Cassandra at events throughout the year
  • Organizing Cassandra events
  • Publishing content (blogs, videos, etc) on Cassandra channels

ASF Compliance

Catalyst vs. ASF roles

The Catalyst award is not to be confused with the project’s committership or being on its PMC, roles that involve project participation and contributions. The Catalyst program is recognition for effort of any type around the project, and is not a position or title within the project or the ASF.

How will swag be produced and distributed?

The Catalyst Program Committee would coordinate distribution of swag (e.g. t-shirts, stickers) through a third-party vendor that will be voted on by the group in a public meeting.

To fund the creation and distribution of swag, the Catalyst Committee can leverage funds sourced through a crowdfunding campaign on Open Collective called Friends of Apache Cassandra (DRAFT - not live). This page was developed based on crowdfunding guidance from the ASF Community Development website.

Open Collective is a fundraising and money management platform for communities that offers transparency and accountability to backers. The Friends of Apache Cassandra Open Collective page clearly states that the campaign is not affiliated with nor endorsed by Apache Cassandra or the Apache Software Foundation, but is an individual effort.
