Background Information

Cassandra will participate as part of the Apache Software Foundation. The ASF is basically guaranteed to be accepted as an umbrella organization. Here is their summer of code page from 2009: http://socghop.appspot.com/gsoc/org/show/google/gsoc2009/asf

It is highly advised that you hop on IRC (#cassandra on Freenode) for more than a few minutes to ask if your idea is a good idea, introduce yourself to the community, and see who plays an active role in Cassandra.
